Highschool Basketball Star Dies After Hitting Game-Winning Shot

A high school basketball player, Wes Leonard, died moments after hitting the game-winning shot.

The 16-year-old boy collapsed on the floor moments after throwing the shot that brought his team, the Fennville Blackhawks, to victory. He was rushed by ambulance to Holland Hospital immediately after his collapse and was later pronounced dead by doctors, who are still searching for the cause of death.

“The information that we have is that he made the game-winning basket, and that there were a number of players and fans out on the court, and Wes just collapsed,” said Deb Patterson, Holland Hospital’s patient care coordinator. “Wes arrived at 9:20 and paramedics were performing CPR on him. He was pronounced dead at 10:40.

Leonard scored more than 1,000 career points in basketball and was well on his way to becoming a professional, earning an all-state honorable mention recognition.
